MEET CHRIS

Chris's Life Is Full Of People Who Want Him Here For The Years Ahead

Chris is living with end-stage liver disease and waiting for a liver transplant at UCSF Health.

The medical situation is serious, but this page is intentionally about more than illness. It is about family milestones, ordinary days together, future celebrations and the chance to keep showing up for the people you love.

Finding a compatible living donor could give Chris another path to transplant while he waits. That is why his family and friends are reaching well beyond the people who already know him.

“The person who can help Chris may be someone none of us has met yet.”

If this story means something to you, the most useful thing may be simply to pass it on. A colleague, friend, neighbor or friend-of-a-friend may be the connection we could never reach on our own.

WHY WE SHARE WIDELY?

Living Donation Searches Move Through Networks

We are asking respectfully and broadly because the right person may be outside Chris's immediate circle. You do not need to be a donor to help the search move farther.

THE ESSENTIALS

Living Liver Donation, Simply Explained

A potential donor is evaluated independently, with donor safety is at the center of the process.

1/2

A Portion Of The Liver

A living donor gives a portion of their liver, not the whole organ. UCSF explains the operation and recovery in detail during evaluation.

✓

Eligibility is individualized

Do not try to decide every medical criterion yourself. UCSF determines suitability based on health, anatomy and other factors.

↻

The Liver Regenerates

The liver has a remarkable capacity to regenerate after living donation. UCSF explains the expected recovery and regeneration for both donor and recipient.

P

Your information is private

Potential donor screening is confidential and handled directly by the UCSF living-donor team.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

The First Step Is Information, Not A Commitment

1 - QUESTIONNAIRE

Complete UCSF's confidential online living-donor questionnaire.

4 - DECISION

Only after evaluation do an approved donor and the transplant team decide whether donation should proceed.

3 - EVALUATION

If appropriate, UCSF guides you through medical testing, education and independent donor evaluation.

2 - UCSF REVIEW

If appropriate, UCSF guides you through medical testing, education and independent donor evaluation.

COSTS AND PRACTICAL SUPPORT

Ask UCSF what applies to your circumstances.

UCSF offers a comprehensive financial program for organ donation that includes support for living donors and their families. This program aims to alleviate financial burdens associated with the donation process, ensuring that donors can focus on their health and the donation experience without added stress.

This site deliberately avoids promising that donation is “100% free,” because individual non-medical circumstances can differ.

QUESTIONS ARE NORMAL

Living Donor FAQ

A few practical answers before you decide whether to contact

UCSF. For medical advice or eligibility, the UCSF living-donor

team is the definitive source.

Do I need to know or be related to Chris?

No. Potential living liver donors do not have to be relatives. UCSF evaluates whether a donor and recipient are medically compatible and whether donation is safe for the donor.

−

What blood type does Chris need?

Chris has type O blood, so a potential living donor for him would also need type O blood. UCSF determines all other compatibility and eligibility factors.

−

Does filling out the questionnaire commit me to donating?

No. It is a screening step that allows the UCSF living-donor team to review whether it makes sense to contact you for more information or evaluation.

−

Will Chris or his family see my medical information?

Potential donor screening is handled confidentially by UCSF. Chris and his family do not manage donor medical screening or receive a potential donor's private medical results.

−

What if I am not sure whether I am medically suitable?

You do not need to work through every medical criterion yourself. UCSF's donor team reviews potential donors individually and can tell you whether further evaluation makes sense.

−

What about costs and time away from work?

Transplant-related medical costs are generally handled through the recipient's transplant coverage, while non-medical costs can vary. Ask UCSF about travel, lodging, lost wages, dependent care and any assistance programs that may apply to you.

−

What if I cannot donate?

Please share supportchrisg.com A potential donor may be several connections away, so expanding the search is itself a meaningful way to help.

−

Will I have to pay anything?

No. All medical-related costs are covered by the recipient's insurance. And we work with living donors to help close the gap on expenses that aren’t covered, such as travel and lodging. UCSF FAQ

−

"What protections are available to someone who becomes a living organ donor?"

California law provides important protections for living organ donors. For employees, California Labor Code §1510 provides up to 30 business days of paid leave for organ donation, plus up to 30 additional business days of unpaid leave, subject to the requirements of the law. An employer may require an employee to use up to two weeks of accrued sick leave, vacation, or PTO before beginning organ-donation leave. The law also protects the employee's continuous service and requires continuation of group health coverage during the paid leave period.

California law also provides protections against certain insurance discrimination based on an individual's status as a living organ donor.

ITS PERSONAL

FROM THOSE THAT KNOW AND LOVE HIM

AMY AND ADAM - BEST FRIENDS

“Chris Geraci is one of the most spectacular human beings we know! Helene and I met in college over 30 years ago and have been best friends ever since. We both met Chris during the same time. I knew Chris and Helene would be married one day. Chris is the most self less human I have ever known. If you are his friend he is a friend for life. He is a devoted husband, father and brother, a trait he learned from his amazing father. We have so many great memories, so many good times. Adam and I love you Chris! Keep fighting!”

CHRIS BONAVENTURE

“I met Chris when our kids were going to the same daycare, and we quickly connected over our love of football and good food. Before long, we were spending weekends together, watching our favorite teams and trying to outdo each other with whatever meal we could come up with.

What has always stood out most about Chris is how much he looks out for the people around him. He opens his home to everyone, makes people feel welcome, and always makes sure there is something good to eat. He is always thinking about everyone else before he ever thinks about himself.

Chris is generous, loyal, selfless, and always there when someone needs him. I feel lucky that a friendship that started because of our kids has lasted all these years. Chris is the kind of friend everyone hopes to have.”

PLEASE HELP MY BROTHER, CHRIS‍ ‍

“My brother Chris is 55 years old. He is a husband, a father, a brother, and a friend—and to everyone who knows him, he is simply one of the nicest guys you could ever meet.

Chris was a sweet little boy who grew into an incredibly kind and caring man. He has always had a great sense of humor and a way of making people laugh. His home has always been a place where people felt welcome, and he has always loved entertaining family and friends—especially when there was a BBQ involved!

Chris has been a devoted Los Angeles Rams fan for as long as I can remember. But more than anything, Chris loves his family. He is married to his wife, Helene, and together they have a beautiful 19-year-old daughter who is now in college.

Today, Chris is facing something no family ever wants to face. He needs a liver transplant. He is searching for a living donor who may be able to give him the gift of more time.

Chris wants the chance to walk his daughter down the aisle.

He wants to watch her build her life and see his grandchildren grow up.

He wants to hear what may become the greatest name he will ever have—Poppop.

He wants to grow old with Helene, retire, travel, make memories, and enjoy the years ahead with the people he loves.

And I want my brother to have that chance.

I love Chris more than words can say, and I am asking anyone who might consider becoming a living liver donor to please learn more about what donation involves and consider whether you could help him.

You don’t have to know Chris personally to potentially make an incredible difference in his life. A living liver donation is a deeply personal decision, and there is absolutely no obligation—but if you are willing to explore the possibility, you could be giving Chris something priceless: more time with his family.

Please consider becoming a donor for Chris.

Help him get the chance to walk his daughter down the aisle.

Help him get the chance to become Poppop.

Help him get the chance to grow old with the woman he loves.

Most of all, help give my brother a chance at the future he deserves.”

CHRIS’S BROTHER-IN-LAW, JASON

“My brother-in-law is an incredible person who means so much to my family and I. He’s been in my life for as long as I can remember and has always been the most kind , caring and funny person. A true role model and someone who shows up for the ones he cares about and has never failed to show it. I could never thank him enough for the positive impact he’s made on me as a person and in my life.”
